Consider a Natural Gas Detector for your Home!

Natural gas detectors are essential for safety because methane (the primary component of natural gas) is odorless in its raw state. While utility companies add a "rotten egg" smell (mercaptan) as a warning, a dedicated detector provides a much faster and more reliable alert. You should install detectors high on the wall or on the ceiling, and within 10 feet of gas appliances (like your stove or furnace).

Recommendations

  • National Grid: Recommends using UL 1484-listed detectors and warns against disconnecting them to silence an alarm, as they should only be reset after a safety inspection.
  • While natural gas has a distinctive rotten-egg odor (mercaptan) added for detection, specialized, UL-listed detectors offer an extra layer of protection, particularly if the odorant fades or is not present.
  • Utilities suggest installing detectors near gas-burning appliances (stoves, furnaces, water heaters) and in basements where gas lines enter the home.

Important Safety Information

  • Detectors are not a substitute for the odorized warning smell of gas, but an addition.
  • If a natural gas detector sounds, treat it as a serious emergency, evacuate the building, and call Okaloosa Gas at 850-729-4700 or 911. We will respond immediately.
  • Do not depend solely on a device; continue to have appliances inspected annually.
